Basketry

Debbie Both – Traditional basketmaker –

For 32 years I made my living as a willow basketmaker. I gave up the world of mental health social work and became apprenticed to Ronnie Woods, master basketmaker of Dereham, Norfolk, UK. This trade not only gave me an adequate living, it opened up doors to so many friends and experiences. 003I travelled to various countries, and many parts of England, demonstrating and selling my baskets, and I was lucky to spend four months living and working with the aboriginal basketmakers of the Northern Territory, Australia.

My baskets use many traditional forms, but I incorporate many coloured willows to bring a modern vibrancy to a useful and sustainable product.

Tall Hamper 001Although I am now “semi retired” here in Galicia, Spain, I still make a few baskets, and can be seen selling my baskets and demonstrating my craft at the Monforte Rastrillo on some Sundays, and twice a year at the artisan market @ LemosVerde in Mer Sober.

Six - Bottle carrierI am a member of the Basketmakers Association, with a worldwide membership, and I am a Yeoman of The Worshipful Company of Basketmakers, one of the oldest City of London Livery Companies.
